3 ASSIGNMENT CLARIFICATION!

4 For this assignment, you need to “identify a specific feature of the story that makes it ‘scary’ and explain how that feature works.” Based on the work you have done so far, find specific evidence – key words or phrases – that illustrate your “specific feature,” so you can use this evidence to support your claims. Make a list of those words and phrases for possible use in your paper.

5 One feature of “The Book” that makes the story scary is the unknown.
My memories are very confused. There is even much doubt as to where they begin; it seems as if the present moment were an isolated point in a grey, formless infinity. I am not even certain how I am communicating this message. These words and phrases could help you IDENTIFY “the unknown” as a feature that “makes the story scary.” I have a vague impression You might spend one or two body paragraphs citing such evidence to show what you mean by “the unknown” and to show that it really IS a key feature. My identity, too, is bewilderingly cloudy. I seem to have suffered a great shock

6 One feature of “The Book” that makes the story scary is the unknown.
Topic Sentence 1: References to the unknown appear in the first sentence of the story and dominate the opening paragraph. Topic Sentence 2: Similar references continue throughout the story. Topic Sentence 3: The use of unknown in classic horror stories and films shows that audiences are frightened by the unknown. (Evidence from outside the story – from scary movies and scary stories.) Topic Sentence 4: The use of unknown works the same way in “The Book.” (Show parallels between “The Book” and the movies/stories mentioned in body paragraph 4.) Thus we see that Lovecraft draws on a long tradition of scaring audiences by presenting them with unidentified sounds, mysterious shapes, unexplained occurrences, and other story elements that they can’t quite know.
