experiencing God’s power
sharing Christ’s suffering
taking on Christ’s nature
Note: “knowing” in this context means
total understanding of the other person

4. How can I know Christ? (vv. 1 – 7)
connections won’t do it
work and effort can’t cut it
gaining Christ means losing yourself

5. Looking ahead (vv. 12) I have not yet reached my
goal, and I am not perfect.
But Christ has taken hold of
me.
So I keep on running and
struggling to take hold of
the prize (CEV)

6. Where do I go from here? (vv. 12)
there’s still some way to go: there’ll always be room to grow
keep on keeping on: “press” forward
reach out: “take hold” of life (see John 10:10)

7. Bridging the gap
Perseverance (keeping on) is a means by which we get closer to Christ
It means not looking back but looking ahead toward Christ with single minded purpose

8. Living as God intends thanking God for His guidance in the past
recognising where God is working in us (and in the church) today
looking forward with expectation: committing ourselves to walk with Him
