EVALUATION: TOPIC SENTENCE
(TS) is written in BLUE ink. The topic sentence begins the way the teacher stated it should. In Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, the tree represents/Melinda/opinion/claim… The TS clearly states the main idea of the paragraph The TS includes the title of the story and it is underlined. The TS includes the name of the author. The TS is from the writer’s head. The TS includes CM words (words with feelings behind them) Underline the CM words in the TS (with GREEN pen)

CONCRETE DETAIL SENTENCE (Quote)
(CD) sentence is written in RED ink. The CD is the “stuff from the story;” something that happened! CD is directly supports the TS (something about the tree that is related to MELINDA) It is the evidence. The CD sentence is written in the T,L,CD (#). format Begins with a TRANSITION (For example,) Transition is followed by a LEAD-IN PHRASE (extra information—gives context– sets up the CD) CD THE QUOTE (the actual evidence) follows the lead-in phrase The sentence includes a MLA parenthetical citation (the page number of where this CD is written in the story) …. (6).

COMMENTARY SENTENCE #1 The CM sentences are written in GREEN ink.
The commentary sentences contain the “stuff from the writer’s head”. (Not from the story!) Begins with This shows that… or This is important because… The commentary sentences contain descriptive CM words (words with feelings behind them). Underline the CM words in the Commentary Sentence Commentary is developed and insightful (does not repeat or state the obvious). Further supports the main idea of the paragraph Relates to the CD (explains the quote)

If CM begins with the phrase: This also shows that… or This is also important because… CROSS IT OUT The commentary sentences contain descriptive CM words (words with feelings behind them). Underline the CM words in the Commentary Sentence Commentary is developed and insightful (does not repeat or state the obvious). Further supports the main idea of the paragraph Relate to the CD (explains the quote)

CONCLUDING SENTENCE CS is written in BLUE ink.
The CS relates to the main idea in TS, but does NOT REPEAT it. The CS contains CM words. (opinion) Underline the CM words with GREEN pen, The CS does NOT contain CD (“stuff from the story”) The CS ties commentary together with topic sentence Gives a sense of closure
