2 The arts Louis XIV’s palace was filled with art & made a tremendous impact on Europe The Baroque style was dying out, and a new one, known as rococo, was taking its place. Rococo emphasized grace, charm, and gentle action

3 music 18th Century was one of the greatest periods in the history of European music Bach- composer Handel- composer; known for writing The Messiah Haydn- musical director Mozart- child prodigy & composer

4 Literature 18th century was important in the development of the European novel, whish was very popular among middle-class readers.

5 Enlightened absolutism
Definition- system where rulers tried to govern by Enlightenment principles, while maintaining their royal powers Enlightened absolutist rulers: Frederick the Great of Prussia- well educated & cultured monarchs of the 18th century; Invited Voltaire to live in his palace Joseph II of Austria- wanted to remove any obstacle that stood in the way of reason; only monarch to truly seek changes based on radical Enlightenment ideas Catherine II/The Great of Russia- intelligent woman, familiar with philosophies, invited Diderot to Russia

6 7 years War Fought over land & succession to the throne
Britain & Prussia against Austria, Russia, and France Britain “won” by getting the most land Aka the French & Indian War in North America; France & Britain fought for land & control; Britain won, becoming the world’s greatest colonial power
