FOOD The main meat of the Plains Indians was the bison (buffalo). The meat was prepared in different ways Besides the bison, antelope, deer, elk and moose were hunted. Gophers, rabbits, prairie chickens and other small animals and birds were caught in snare traps Dried sage was used for flavoring food and moss was used for tea.

HUNTING The plains Indians used to not use horses when the hunted especially the Blackfoot. Although they hunted other animals, like elk or antelope, bison was by far the most plentiful food source throughout their area. A commonly used technique was the Piskin method. The tribesmen would build a corral and have people to herd the buffalo into it where they could be killed.

WEAPONS The weapons of the Plains Indians were spears, bows and various forms of club. When horses were introduced to the Indians when white settlers came to America, it made hunting much easier. With horses, the Indians could simply stampede and overtake the bison with their speed. Bows were still used when guns were introduced, as guns took too long to reload and were too heavy.

ENVIRONMENT The Great Plains are a vast high plateau of semiarid grassland. Their elevation at the base of the Rockies in the United States is between 5,000 and 6,000 feet Much of the plains area consists of gently tilted shale, limestone, and sandstone discontinuously mantled by glacial deposits (in the north)

CLOTHING The men wore long shirts , breechcloths, long leggings, a belt and moccasins. The women wore long dresses , short leggings (knee-high) and moccasins. The dresses were made of hide that draped over the shoulders. The sides were sewn together with sinew or leather strips. Belts were made from strips of hide. Both the men and women wore belts. Small pouches and knives were often hung from the belts.

CLOTHING CON’T The shoes were called moccasins. Different styles of moccasins were worn by the various tribes. Most moccasins were made of moose hide or buffalo hide The hide was smoked over a fire to make it more waterproof. Then the moccasins were stitched together with sinew. Winter moccasins had the fur inside to keep the feet warm. Dried grass was also added to the inside for extra protection from the cold.

HOUSING Housing was made out of Buffalo hides
The Houses were held up by wooden Poles The houses stayed cool in the summer and warm in the harsh winters. The tribes thought that the houses were so important they actually painted there teepees.
