35 Support, Movement, and Responses
Foldables Support, Movement, and Responses Make the following Foldable to help you understand the functions of skin, muscles, bones, and nerves.

36 Foldables Fold a sheet of paper in half lengthwise. Make the back edge about 1.25 cm longer than the front edge.

37 Fold the paper in half widthwise, twice.
Foldables Fold the paper in half widthwise, twice.

38 Foldables Unfold and cut only the top layer along the three folds to make four tabs. Label the tabs as shown.

39 Foldables Read and Write As you read the chapter, list the functions that skin, muscles, bones, and nerves have in support, movement, and responses.

43 Reviewing Main Ideas 1 The Skin The epidermis produces melanin. Cells at the base of the epidermis produce new skin cells. The dermis contains nerves, sweat and oil glands, and blood vessels. The skin protects the body, reduces water loss, produces vitamin D, and helps to maintain body temperature. Severe skin damage can lead to infection and death if left untreated.

44 Reviewing Main Ideas 2 The Muscular System Skeletal muscle is voluntary and moves bones. Smooth muscle is involuntary and controls movement of internal organs. Cardiac muscle is involuntary and located only in the heart. Muscles only can contract. When one skeletal muscle contracts, the other relaxes.

45 Reviewing Main Ideas 3 The Skeletal System Bones are living structures that protect, support, make blood, store minerals, and provide for muscle attachment. Joints are either immovable or moveable.

46 Reviewing Main Ideas 4 The Nervous System The nervous system responds to stimuli to maintain homeostasis. A neuron is the basic unit of structure and function of the nervous system. A reflex is an automatic response.

47 Reviewing Main Ideas 4 The Nervous System The central nervous system is the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes cranial and spinal nerves. Your senses enable you to react to your environment. Many drugs affect your nervous system.

48 Chapter Review Question 1 How do sweat glands in your skin help regulate your body’s temperature? Answer The evaporation of sweat from your skin removes heat from your body and cools the skin. This process eliminates excess heat produced by muscle contractions. LE 1.2h

49 Chapter Review Question 2 Which describes the importance of what is happening in these two pictures of a runner? LE 1.2c

50 A. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Chapter Review A. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. B. Food supplies chemical energy needed for muscle activity. C. Resting before running is important. D. Wait an hour after eating before you run. LE 1.2c

51 Chapter Review Answer The correct answer is B. The chemical energy in food is converted into mechanical energy (movement) in muscle cells.

52 Chapter Review Question 3 What compounds necessary for the working of your body, including the movement of muscles, are stored in your bones? A. calcium and phosphorus B. marrow and cartilage C. neurons and axons D. spongy bone and compact bone LE 1.2a

53 Chapter Review Answer The correct answer is A. Bone cells called osteoclasts break down bone to release these compounds into the bloodstream.

54 Question 4 Which is sensitive to light energy? A. cornea C. pupil
Chapter Review Question 4 Which is sensitive to light energy? A. cornea C. pupil B. lens D. retina LE 1.2b

55 Chapter Review Answer The answer is D. The retina contains cells called rods and cones that respond to light by producing impulses that stimulate the optic nerve.

56 Chapter Review Question 5 Which part of the nervous system includes 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves? Answer The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes all of the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord and is further divided into the somatic and autonomic systems. LE 1.2h

57 Standardized Test Practice
Question 1 While walking through a darkened room, you bump your arm on a table. The next day a bruise appears on your arm. What caused the bruise? A. damage to sweat glands in the dermis of your skin B. entry of bacteria into your skin C. rapid loss of water from your skin D. tiny broken blood vessels under your skin LE 1.2f

58 Standardized Test Practice
Answer The correct answer is D. When blood vessels break, blood cells leak into surrounding tissues. As they gradually break down, pigments are produced that cause the bruise to turn shades of blue, red, and purple.

59 Standardized Test Practice
Question 2 The action of muscles, bones, and joints working together is like a lever. What part can be compared to the fulcrum of a lever? A. bones B. joints C. muscles D. tendons LE 1.2a

60 Standardized Test Practice
Answer The correct answer is B. A fulcrum is a point about which a lever pivots. Bones pivot around the joint using the force supplied by muscles.

61 Question 3 What type of joint is pictured here? A. ball-and socket
Standardized Test Practice Question 3 What type of joint is pictured here? A. ball-and socket B. gliding C. hinge D. pivot LE 1.2g

62 Standardized Test Practice
Answer The correct answer is C. A hinge joint has a back-and-forth movement like hinges on a door. Besides knees, elbows and fingers also have hinge joints.

63 Standardized Test Practice
Question 4 Where is this structure found in the body and what is its function? LE 1.2h

64 A. found in the ears and produces sound waves
Standardized Test Practice A. found in the ears and produces sound waves B. found in the ears and used for balance C. found in the eyes and focuses light D. found in eyes and stimulates optic nerve LE 1.2h

65 Standardized Test Practice
Answer The correct answer is B. As your body moves, the gel-like fluid surrounding the hair cells moves and stimulates nerve cells. Your brain interprets the impulses and helps you keep your balance.

66 Standardized Test Practice
Question 5 What must happen before the nerve fibers of a taste bud are stimulated? A. food must be chewed B. food must contain salt C. food must contain sugar D. food must be dissolved in saliva LE 1.2h

67 Answer The correct answer is D. When a solution of food and saliva
Standardized Test Practice Answer The correct answer is D. When a solution of food and saliva washes over taste buds, impulses are sent to the brain and you can identify tastes.
