2 Nursery/Primary 1 – All about phonics
Building blocks of reading/writing Alphabet made up of 26 letters and around 44 sounds Letter names not taught until much later Single sounds first, then digraphs Blending sounds to form words from the very start Jolly phonics – story, song, action, sound

3 How do we teach phonics? Multisensory approach Repetition!
Up to 4 sounds a week in term 1 of primary 1 Make, write, do

4 What about reading? Introduced to books right away
Taught how to physically ‘operate’ a book Blending from 3 sounds – first reading book Taught how to read – not just learning individual words Slow process at first Fluency and expression come later

5 Phonics books

Different skills at each band Set of skills children at each band Better than relying on one scheme

7 Reading comprehension infant classes
Comprehension strategies – done on any text Read and respond Sra Verbal/oral – not always written Based on reading book when appropriate – can do this at home

14 Important points to take away
Reading must be for pleasure too First we must teach the skills of reading then we move on to understanding Give children the skills to tackle unfamiliar words Reading can improve general knowledge, punctuation, spelling, grammar, overall writing, imagination… Everyone moves at their own pace!
