15 Monday 11/13 Please answer the following on the back of your Themes graphic organizer: Which theme do you think is most prevalent and important in The Other Wes Moore? Support your response with at least three pieces of evidence from the text.

16 Tomorrow: Socratic Seminar
Socrates believed that enabling learners to think for themselves was more important than filling their heads with “right answers.” He stressed the importance of asking and answering questions as the true sign of learning and knowledge.

17 What is a Socratic Seminar?
Discussion in which… The text is being considered Questions are being raised A leader helps move the discussion forward Many participants pose and answer questions Usually minutes long NOT a debate

18 Debate vs. Dialogue Debate... Dialogue...
defends thinking to show that it is right expects others’ reflections will improve their own thinking calls for investing in one’s beliefs is temporarily suspending one’s beliefs searches for weaknesses searches for strengths rebuts contrary positions and may devalue others respects others and seeks not to alienate assumes a single right answer assumes that cooperation can lead to greater understanding demands a conclusion remains open-ended

19 The Participants Share responsibility for the quality of the seminar.
Most effective when participants: study the text closely in advance listen actively

20 The Participants Most effective when participants:
share their ideas and questions in response to others search for evidence in the text to support their ideas

21 The Questions Are open-ended Have no right or wrong answers
At the end of successful Socratic Seminars, participants often leave with more questions than they brought with them. Should stem from genuine curiosity Should rely on textual evidence for support

22 The Seminar The leader will pose the opening question
You simply start talking to respond –no hand raising Be prepared with your notes, questions, and book Don’t jump in if you don’t have anything constructive to say BUT… don’t wait too long and then run out of time to participate When the discussion lulls – when no one else is answering the question – it’s time to pose a new question Be sure you stick to respectful, accountable talk

23 Examples of Solid Questions
“I Have a Dream” Speech What theme is Dr. King’s speech primarily about, and why do you believe that? How might the message of Dr. King’s speech have been received by various audiences at the time? In what ways is the speech about governance? Or justice? Or contentedness? According to Dr. King, what does it mean to be an American?

24 The Rules Speak so that all can hear you. Listen closely.
Take notes (especially the outer circle). Speak without raising hands. Refer to the text. Talk to each other and to the circle – not the teacher. Don’t stay confused – ask for clarification. Invite and allow others to speak. Use only respectful, accountable talk. Know that you are responsible for the quality of the seminar.

25 Preparing for Tomorrow
Answer all the questions that go along with the text. Create a minimum of three text-based questions, which are open-ended and stem from your curiosity. Create a minimum of four back-up questions. Identify elements of the text to use with your questions. Be sure that you have your notes, questions, and book with you tomorrow.
