2 Fig. 1 Clinical features of Mycobacterium massiliense keratitis. (a) Patient 1, bean-shaped paracentral corneal infiltration with epithelial defect in his left eye (arrow); (b) Patient 2, central corneal infiltration (arrow); (c) Patient 3, corneal infiltration at nasal site in his left eye (arrow). There were scars due to previous injuries in all patients' eyes (a–c, arrowheads). (d) Gene array. Red arrow indicates that the isolates belonged to the Mycobacterium abscessus complex. PC is positive control. (e–h) Lanes represent the following: M. massiliense isolates recovered from the three patients with keratitis (lanes 1–3), two random M. abscessus laboratory isolates (lanes 4 and 5), M. abscessus CCUG 20993T (type strain) (lane 6), M. massiliense CCUG 48898T (type strain) (lane 7), and λ phage DNA standards (lane M); (e) erm(41) PCR. Patterns of lanes 1–3 were identical, showed the highest similarity to M. massiliense CCUG 48898T, and were different from the two random laboratory M. abscessus isolates and M. abscessus CCUG 20993T. (f) Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis: the patterns in lanes 1–3 were considered identical. (g, h) AP-PCR using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) -1R and ERIC-2R, respectively. Patterns of arbitrarily primed-PCR were considered to be identical for lanes 1–3, which were clearly different from the type strains and random M. abscessus laboratory isolates.
