Reading Books Reading Books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday. Please read regularly with your children as it has a significant impact on their progress. Record words/ sounds they find tricky. Children receive a sticker every time they read. Once their chart is completed they will receive a certificate.
4
Homework Homework will be sent home on a Thursday to be handed in on Monday. Homework in Year 1 takes the form of a Learning Log in which children have a maths activity and an English activity. These are generally left open ended and alternatives are given to support/ extend. Please encourage your child to complete these with as much independence as possible.
5
PE Kits PE kits need to be clearly named, in a bag which can be closed eg draw string. PE kits must be in school at all times. We do PE twice a week, the days will be confirmed in September.
6
Book bags Please continue to use the school book bags which were allocated in Reception. In Year 1 these are kept in individual trays and we encourage children to be as independent as possible in handing things in and putting letters etc in their own bag. Please continue to send children with a named water bottle on a daily basis.

Phonics Phonics is a key part of children’s progress in Year 1.
We build upon the sounds children have learnt in Reception and teach different ways to spell them. Children take a Phonics screening check at the end of Year 1 in which they read a selection of real and nonsense words.
8
Reading Reading regularly with your child is essential to help them apply their phonic knowledge regularly. Books will be changed on a Monday and children will get books linked to their phonics ability. Help children to sound out words and blend them with independence.
9
Diddy Dots At the end of each day children receive a ‘diddy dot’ if they have demonstrated exceptional behaviour. If children do not behave in the way we expect they will lose their ‘diddy dot’. Children receive certificates in the commendations assembly at the end of each term if they have earned all of their ‘diddy dots’.
