1 Current Trends in CLT By Fernanda Munoz

2 Communicative language teaching can be understood as a set of principles about the goals of language teaching, how learners learn a language, the kinds of classroom activities that best facilitate learning, and the roles of teachers and learners in the classroom. (Clarke and Silberstein (1977)

3 Can be applied in different ways depending on:
The teaching context The age of the learners Their level Their learning goals and so on.

4 Communicative competence includes the following aspects of language knowledge:
1. Knowing how to use language for a range of different purposes and Functions. 2. Knowing how to vary our use of language according to the setting and the participants 3. Knowing how to produce and understand different types of texts (e.g., narratives, reports, interviews, conversations) 4. Knowing how to maintain communication despite having limitations in one’s language knowledge.

5 Ten Core Assumptions of Current Communicative Language Teaching
Meaningful Communication. When learners are engaged interactions facilitates second language meaning. Effective learning task. Opportunities for student to expand their language resources, notice how language is used, and take part in meaningful interpersonal exchange. Meaningful communication results from students processing content that is relevant, purposeful, interesting, and engaging.

4. Communication is a Holistic process. The proper balance of analytical and experiential activities in the classroom. 5. Language learning is facilitated by inductive or discovery activities 6. Language learning is a gradual process that involves creative use of language, and trial and error. 7. Learners have different needs and motivations.

7 8. Successful language learning involves the use of effective learning and communication strategies.
9. The role of the teacher, is a facilitator, creates a classroom climate conducive to language learning and provides opportunities for students to use and practice the language and to reflect on language use. 10. The Classroom is a Community

8 These changes are: 1. Learner autonomy 2. The social nature of learning 3. Curricular integration 4. Focus on meaning 5. Diversity 6. Thinking skills 7. Alternative assessment Jacobs and Farrell(2003)suggest that the CLT paradigm shift outlined above has led to eight major change in approaches to language teaching.
