2 ETHICS?

3 ETHICS eth·ics –noun 1. the body of moral principles or values governing or distinctive of a particular culture or group: the Christian ethic; the tribal ethic of the Zuni. 2. a complex of moral precepts held or rules of conduct followed by an individual: a personal ethic.

4 Fitness Code of Ethics This Code of Ethical Conduct defines what good practice is for professionals in the fitness industry by reflecting on the core values of rights, relationships, responsibilities, standards and safety.

5 Fitness Code of Ethics The role of an exercise professional is to:
Identify and meet the needs of individuals Improve performance or fitness through programs of safe, effective and enjoyable exercise Create an environment in which individuals are motivated to maintain participation and improve performance or fitness Conform to ethical standards in a number of areas – humanity, relationships, co-operation, integrity, advertising, confidentiality and personal standards

6 Fitness Code of Ethics The code of ethics covers five main areas:
Principle 1 RIGHTS Principle 2 RELATIONSHIPS Principle 3 PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Principle 4 PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS Principle 5 SAFE WORKING PRACTICE

7 Principle 1 RIGHTS Promote the rights of every individual to participate in exercise, and recognise that people should be treated as individuals. Not condone or allow to go unchallenged any form of discrimination, nor to publicly criticise in demeaning descriptions of others.

8 Principle 2 RELATIONSHIPS
Develop a relationship with customers based on openness, honesty, mutual trust and respect. Ensure that physical contact is appropriate and necessary and is carried out within the recommended guidelines and with the participants full consent and approval.

9 Principle 3 PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrate proper personal behaviour and conduct at all times. Project an image of health, cleanliness and functional efficiency, and display high standards in use of language, manner, punctuality, preparation, and presentation.

10 Principle 4 PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS
Work towards attaining a high level of competence through qualifications and a commitment to ongoing training that ensures safe and correct practice, which will maximise benefits and minimise risks to the participant. Promote the execution of safe and effective practice and plan all sessions so that they meet the needs of the participants and are progressive and appropriate.

11 Principle 5 SAFE WORKING PRACTICE
Compliance with this principle requires exercise professionals to maintain a safe exercise environment for all clients and at all times and to responsibly demonstrate: A responsible attitude to the care and safety of client participants within the training environment and in planned activities ensuring that both are appropriate to the needs of the clients. An appropriate ratio of instructors to clients within any group sessions to ensure that at all times the safety of all clients is paramount. All clients have been systematically prepared for the activity in terms of safety including the safe use of equipment.
