Bus Stop Proximity Study An Application of Geographic Information Systems Adam Parast Kendra Hartstrom April Pust Sean Liner
2
Objectives Analyze population density along selected Metro bus routes
Use this data to determine the number of people who live within a five minute walk of a bus stop or five minute drive of a park and ride
3
Data Used All data used was for King County and the layers included:
Population density Bus route locations Park and Ride locations Bus stop locations
4
Analysis The following steps were taken to complete this analysis:
Bus stop data was related to route data Buffers were created around the intersections of bus routes and bus stops Two separate proximity buffers were created Within 5 minute walk of a bus stop Within 5 mile drive of a Park and Ride Using the population density and buffer area, the population along each bus route was determined
5
Results and Conclusions
Populations were determined for Metro’s 49, 255, 554, 101, and 358 routes. This data is shown in the table below.
6
Results and Conclusions
The 255 had the highest population along it’s route with 184,356 people. However, it stops at 6 Park and Rides (the most of any of the selected routes) The 49 had the lowest population with nearly 70,000 people, but stops at zero Park and Rides along it’s route.
