What was the progressivism movement? Focused on returning government control to the people and correct injustices in American society

What type of reforms would apply to protecting social welfare during this time period? Feeding the poor Caring for children of immigrant workers Educating immigrants Labor issues (i.e. working hours and child labor)

Florence Kelley: Educated woman Earned a graduate degree at the University of Zurich in Switzerland Married in Switzerland, but later divorced with 3 small children Moved to Chicago and was a resident at Hull House Settlement houses inspired her to be a social reformer

Kelley became an advocate for child labor laws Became a lawyer and successfully argued against corrupt corporations’ labor practices Won passage of the Illinois Factory Act in 1893: Prohibited child labor Limited women’s working hours

National Child Labor Committee: Organization to stop child labor Gathered evidence of harsh conditions Exposed the harsh treatment and low pay given to children laborers Keating-Owen Act in 1916: Goods made by children could not be transported across state boundaries (repealed) Though, this act helped for other laws to be made on banning child labor

Prohibition Frances Willard: President of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) Largest women’s group in history Promoted prohibition by going to saloons praying, singing, and urging to stop the selling of alcohol

Muckrakers Journalists who exposed corruption. Theodore Roosevelt first used this label Literary character from the book The Pilgrim’s Progress Busy cleaning and raking up the muck and dirt that he didn't see the good things that were above his head.
