What is the Akamai Short Course? - Kicks off the Akamai Internship Program - Community College & Undergrads from HI - CfAO Research Positions in High Tech - Collaboration between CfAO, MEDB, MCC, and AMOS - Eight Week introduction to research methods and tools w/ focus on AO technology - One Week Intensive Instruction Course - Essentials of Geometric optics, with Emphasis on the Basics of Telescope Design and Use - Basics of the Scientific Method and Engineering Procedure

Akamai Maui Short Course 2006 Who Are the Students? - 10-15 Hawaii-based students: from MCC (ECET Program), University of Hawaii, and those attending mainland universities - Each student is matched with a research advisor - Integrated into research teams - Receives daily guidance & direction - CfAO continues to track student progress - Weekly reporting meetings - Participation in a Research Expo in Maui

Akamai Maui Short Course 2006 The Short Course Program, Part One - Primary Science Goal: - To gain an understanding of a variety of Scientific and Engineering Content, with an Emphasis on CfAO Research Areas - Two Principle Categories: - Telescopes: What They Are, How They Work - History & Overview of Design Philosophy - Underlying Physical Principles - Telescopes: Their Uses - Overview of How Telescopes are Used in Science & Industry - Modern Astronomical Procedures (Image Processing, Data Reduction)

Knowledge Surveys Feedback Surveys

Akamai Maui Short Course 2006 Instructor & Support Teams - Instruction Team: 3-4 Instructors, augmented by instructors from Maui Community College - Support Team: CfAO Educational Staff - Planning: Starts at PDP, continues up until time of Short Course at Weekly Meetings - Modifications, changes to curriculum done by instructor and staff consensus – suggestions and criticisms going towards course improvement encouraged. - Excellent opportunity to gain educational experience.
