DO NOW: Based on the summary equation for photosynthesis shown below, which of the following is produced by the reaction? Why do you say that? 6CO2 + 6H2O + light → C6H12O6 + 6O2 A CO2 B H2O C light D C6H12O6

How do plants convert the sun’s energy to sugar?
Photosynthesis How do plants convert the sun’s energy to sugar?
3
Three Step Process Photosynthesis is the basic process of turning Carbon Dioxide and water into Sugar and oxygen There are three steps: Collect the suns rays Make energy carrying molecules (NADPH + ATP) Make Glucose (sugar) in the Calvin Cycle
7
Step 1 Collect light The light collecting is called the light reactions. Sun rays hit the leaves top layer and enter through to the palisades layer. In the palisades layer there are hundreds of chloroplasts. Inside each chloroplast is a thylakoid where water is waiting to be split and used for energy and hydrogen.

Step 2: Making of ATP and NADPH
ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate) made from ADP+Phosphate+the energy from the split of water. NADPH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate) - is made from NADP+ and a Hydrogen from the split of water.

Step 3: Calvin Cycle making Glucose
The ATP and NADPH is used to run the Calvin Cycle and eventually make C6H12O6 The cycle turns 6 times Using 1 CO2 for each turn. The final product of Photosynthesis and the Calvin cycle in 1 molecule of Glucose.
