3 Scholarships

4 Autism Scholarship Program (ASP)
What is it? “gives the parents of children with autism who qualify for a scholarship the choice to send the child to a special education program other than the one operated by the school district of residence to receive their education and  the services outlined in the child's individualized education program (IEP)”

5 ASP Who is eligible? “Children who are at least three years old, but less than twenty two years old, have been identified by their school district of residence as a child with autism, and have a current, finalized IEP with that district are eligible for the autism scholarship.

6 ASP How long is the scholarship for?
1 program year or for as long as the current IEP is in place “Each May, parents who are interested in continuing to receive the scholarship must submit a renewal application. Scholarships can be renewed until the child graduates from high school or reaches age twenty two.”

7 ASP Who is responsible for development and renewal of ETR/IEP? Quarterly progress reports? a. ABA school b. District of residence c. Private programs (OT, SLP, PT)

8 Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship
What is it? “a new special education scholarship program named after former state legislator and special education advocate Jon Peterson.” Who is eligible? “The Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Program will provide scholarships to students who, for the school year, are eligible to attend kindergarten through 12th grade and have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) from their district of residence. ”

9 Jon Peterson Who is responsible for ETR/IEP?
There are two application periods annually. February - April 15th. Scholarships awarded to this group of applicants will be for the full school year. October - November 15th. Scholarships awarded during this second application period will be awarded for half of the school year (January 1 through June 30). Who is responsible for ETR/IEP?

10 Let’s Take a Test!!

11 Question True/False I need to complete standardized assessments for all ETR’s including both initial and re-evaluations.

12 Question The first time to begin thinking about a student’s discharge is: a. Whey they begin meeting goals b. When the 3 year re-eval is scheduled/coming up c. When writing the initial ETR/IEP d. None of the above

13 Question True/False When completing a discharge, I should refer back to the most recent ETR in order to make sure all areas originally depicted have been addressed. - Potential problems for “waived” ETR’s

14 Question True/False Once I have written the original Plan of Care/Treatment Plan I do not need to revise it. - IEP goals & objectives are written by the educational team and do not constitute the OT treatment/intervention plan. - In addition to IEP goals/objectives addressed by the OT practitioner, the separate OT treatment/intervention plan should include intervention approaches, types of interventions to be used, outcomes, and any additional occupational therapy goals not listed in the IEP.

15 Question Who is responsible for documenting transfer of care?
Receiving OT Previous OT Both Client (student) must be transferred if the evaluating OT is unable to supervise client care  Transfer of care must be documented by identifying the new OT or transferring student to district administrator of therapy services for reassignment  OT who accepted the transfer is then responsible for all aspects of the client’s OT program, including supervision  If student moves to another school district, document that in occupational therapy log

16 Question True/False Unit of measurement for my goal and objectives do not need to match.

17 Question True/False I need to identify all the different types of services I am providing (direct vs consult) under “Related Services” of Section 7.

18 Explanation Consultation services are no longer listed under related services. These services are to be listed under the section labeled “Support for School Personnel” This then means when you receive a new IEP from another district you will need to make sure to check all areas No longer minutes associated with consult services

19 Question True/False Consultation services include: attending IEP meetings, writing reports, and documenting data from treatment sessions.

20 Explanation Consultation- support you provide the student/parent/team
Examples- development/update of sensory diet, providing feedback on how to set up work space, etc. Indirect services- everything else need to do Examples-documentation of data, attendance at meetings, writing reports, checking , set up/clean up of treatment space, etc.

21 Question True/False In Section 7 of the IEP (related services) I need to specify what I am focusing on in therapy.

22 Specially Designed Instruction
Be specific!!!! What is it? Describe what it is How it will be delivered What group size (indiv, small group, large group) What goals for that service (to address…) Example: “ Individual OT services in order to address fine motor and visual motor difficulties”

23 Question When the state audits the school/district I work in, how do they check to see that I have been meeting the IEP minutes for the students on my caseload? Schedules need to have Student names Seen individual, small group, large group Consult needs to be reflected in schedule

24 Question How long before the IEP meeting date should the school/district be sending parents a draft of the IEP? At least 2 weeks

25 Question Does a discharge statement on the IEP constitute a discharge summary? No…documenting discharge only on the IEP is not sufficient  A discharge summary should be completed and may be attached to the IEP and/or MFE  Discharge should also be documented on the PoC under outcomes

26 Question True/False When I sign the IEP (Section 13) it means that I participated in the development of the IEP not that I necessarily agree with all that was written.

27 Question True/False If I am not attending an IEP meeting and the case manager asks me to sign the IEP, I have to sign it as the day the IEP meeting was held.

28 Question True/False If a full time OTA has a caseload of 50 students it is not a problem for the full time supervising OTR to also have 50 students on their caseload.

29 Question True/False When supervising an OTA, the OTR needs to sign the IEP.
