1 Light and Color Unit 14 Section 4

2 Let’s Review! When light bounces off an object it is known as…
Reflection! When light energy is transferred to matter it is known as… Absorption!

3 How Light Works You can see your reflection in the glass because light
is reflected off the glass. The glass feels warm because light is absorbed by the glass. You can see objects outside because light is transmitted through the glass.

4 I. Transmission Transmission is the passing of light through matter.
For example-light passing through a window.

5 II. Transparent Materials
Transparent materials are types of matter that allows light to pass through with little interference. 1. For example-a sandwich bag

6 III. Translucent Materials
Translucent material transmits light, but it also scatters the light as it passes through. Therefore, no true image is transmitted It appears blurry.

7 IV. Opaque Materials Matter that does not transmit any light is said to be opaque. You cannot see through opaque materials, for example, marbles.

8 V. Color in Objects Color is determined by the wavelengths of light that reach the eyes. Light reflects off an object OR light is transmitted through an object. Then, light reaches your eyes. Your eyes send a signal to your brain and your brain interprets the signals as colors.

9 VI. Color of Opaque Objects
When white light strikes an opaque object, some colors of light are absorbed and others are reflected. Whatever color is reflected determines the color you see. For example, a green sweater reflects green and absorbs all other colors.

10 VII. Color of Transparent -Translucent Objects
Colors of transparent and translucent objects are determined differently than in opaque objects. When you look through colored transparent/translucent objects, you see the color of light that was transmitted. All of the other colors were absorbed.

11 This bottle appears green because all of the colors were absorbed EXCEPT the green color. The green color was transmitted through the bottle. So the bottle appears green to us.

12 Quickie Quiz The passing of light through matter is ________________.
reflection refractions transmission translucent

13 Quickie Quiz In opaque objects, the color you see is
the light that has been ___________. absorbed reflected transmitted

14 Quickie Quiz What color is being reflected or transmitted in this object? Is the color being reflected or transmitted? What colors are being absorbed?

15 Quickie Quiz Is this item transparent, translucent, or opaque?
