1 Roll Assignment 11/23 What is blood? 2. Why do we need blood?
3. What is the main job of your blood?

2 Circulation & The Heart

3 What organs, or parts, make up your circulatory system?
Arteries Veins Heart Blood

4 What is the job of your circulatory system?
To transport oxygen and nutrients around your body and to help to get rid of wastes

5 Circulation There are 3 kinds of circulation in your body:
PULMONARY Circulation: the flow of blood through heart, lungs, and back to the heart again.

6 Circulation There are 3 kinds of circulation in your body:
SYSTEMIC Circulation: Moves oxygen-rich blood to organs and body tissues and back to the heart again.

7 Circulation There are 3 kinds of circulation in your body:
CORONARY Circulation: Describes flow of blood to heart tissues.

8 Types Of Blood Vessels Arteries Move blood away from heart
Have thick & elastic walls, made of smooth muscles. Are connected to ventricles in the heart.

9 Types Of Blood Vessels Veins Move blood toward the heart
Have one-way valves.. Are squeezed by skeletal muscles. Carry blood with waste materials and that is oxygen-poor.

10 Types Of Blood Vessels Capillaries Are microscopic blood vessels.
Connect arteries to veins. Their walls are only one cell thick! Nutrients and oxygen flow to body cells through capillary walls.

12 Circulatory System by Brainpop
. What parts belong to your cardiovascular system? . What does blood do when it gets to the lungs? . What does blood do when it gets to your various body cells?

13 What is Blood Pressure? Blood pressure is the amount of pressure your blood is exerting on your blood vessels. It is highest in the arteries, lower in the capillaries, and even less in the veins.

14

15 What is Blood Pressure? A wave of blood pressure is your pulse.
Measure your resting pulse Measure your pulse after exercise A normal resting pulse is beats per minute.

16 What is Blood Pressure? Blood pressure is always expressed in terms of two numbers, for example 112/60. The first number is a measure of the pressure when ventricles contract. (pushing blood out of the heart) The second numbers is a measure of the pressure when ventricles fill up. Blood Pressure Clip

17 Where can you feel your pulse on your body?
What do we call it when blood pressure is HIGHEST? What do we call it when blood pressure is LOWEST? What do we call it when you have high blood pressure all the time?

18 The Heart

19 Humans have 4 chambers 2 Atria and 2 Ventricles Atria Atria
Ventricle Ventricle

20 The atria contract together and the ventricles contract together.
The left and right sides of the heart are divided by a muscular wall called the septum.

21 Label the parts of the heart on the diagram!
Trace the path of blood through the heart with arrows! Aorta SVC Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Vein Left Atrium Right Atrium Left Ventricle Right Ventricle Septum IVC

22 Left atrium & left ventricle Right atrium & right ventricle
Which two chambers always hold oxygen-rich blood? Left atrium & left ventricle Which two chambers always hold oxygen-poor blood? Right atrium & right ventricle

23 Other Heart Parts to Know:
Aorta: delivers oxygen-rich blood from left ventricle to the rest of the body

24 Other Heart Parts to Know:
Pulmonary artery: delivers blood from right ventricle to lungs

25 Other Heart Parts to Know:
Pulmonary vein: delivers blood from lung into left atria

26 Superior vena cava and Inferior vena cava:
Veins (vena) that come from the body and deliver blood to the right atria Vena Cavas Heart Clip

27 Artificial Hearts
