3 IMS 6217: Course Introduction 3 Dr. Lawrence West, MIS Dept., University of Central Florida LWEST@BUS.UCF.EDU About You Four quotations from last years course evaluations: –Class was definitely dumbed downtoo much on elementary database design. –Level was undergraduate leveldid not master anything. –I am not at the same level as most students in this class and often felt lost. –[Things I liked least] The extent of the work because a student without any background in databases will have a difficult time grasping certain concepts and his/her grades will suffer.

6 IMS 6217: Course Introduction 6 Dr. Lawrence West, MIS Dept., University of Central Florida LWEST@BUS.UCF.EDU Project Groups Group approach has several benefits –Share the wealth by leveraging member expertise –Brainstorming to figure things out –Share the work load –Very similar to real world work environments But… –Logistics of distributed members needs investment to overcome (but also mirror many work environments) –Weak member can have adverse effect (duhhh) Project groups must be formed by next weeks class
