1 I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
Good Morning! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Please grab a lab sheet from the front table. Get out your warm ups page because we have warm up #2 coming!

2 Warm Up #2 Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 1,587 stacks, Group B made 2,113 stacks. Identify the following using the above scenario: Control Group: Independent variable: Dependent variable:

3 Life in the Earth System

4 What are systems? Humans strive to understand the world
We organize information and identify patterns Systems thinking examines links and interactions between components to understand how it works overall System: a set of interacting components that work together

5 System Organization Systems can range in size and complexity
The more complex systems = the more levels of organization How do your interactions with nonliving systems affect your environment?

6 System Biology Systems biology studies biological systems as a whole.
Allows scientists to consider phenomena on different scales.

7 The Earth System The earth is organized into four systems Geosphere
Biosphere Hydrosphere Atmosphere

10 Organization in the Biosphere

11 Components of the Biosphere
Biotic: living things Abiotic: nonliving things

12 Identifying Biotic vs. Abiotic

13 Let’s take a look at some living things….

14 Making a wet mount slide

15 Microscope Safety

16 Clean Up Carefully remove your cover slip and GENTLY rinse it.
Carefully rinse the glass slide. Use a paper towel to gently dry both the cover slip and slide. Place the slide and cover slip back on the tray at your table. Return microscope lenses to low power. Turn off microscope lights.

17 Characteristics of Living Things
What characteristics do you think all organisms must have to be defined as living?

18 Characteristics of Living Things
Made up of cells Require energy Grow and change Reproduce Respond to changes in their environment Adapt Stimuli Homeostasis
