1 Pair and Group Work – Give Clear Instructions and Model

2 Small Group Discussion
What challenges have you had with pair or group work? Preview We know that group work is great for helping young learners increase their language development, but with all their energy it can sometimes be a bit challenging. Divide participants into groups of three. Ask them to number themselves one-two-three within their group. Explain that you will randomly call a number, and the group member with that number should be ready to share what their group discussed. This requires them to listen well. Ask participants to read and respond to the prompt. Call on a few participants by number to share with the whole group. For example, say I’d like to hear from number three in your group. What was one challenge someone in your group shared?

3 Video In this segment, you’ll hear some strategies for how to structure pair and group work to overcome some of the challenges we just talked about. One way is to give clear instructions and model. Distribute Handout 11.1. Ask participants to use this handout to take notes on ways to give clear instructions and model. Play the video.
