Occupied Berlin Berlin was similarly divided into four distinct areas but was situated some 100 miles within Soviet controlled eastern Germany, connected only by one highway and rail line to the west.

Berlin Blockade Growing tensions between the Allies and the Soviets escalated in 1948, with frequent road closures and inspections of Allied transports into Berlin. June 24, 1948: Soviets cut power to Berlin and set up a blockade preventing any land access into the city.
