2 Introduction Housekeeping
Who we are – New Roots Housing Project and the ‘It’s not OK’ Campaign What we hope to do: To increase awareness and understanding of CSE/CSA, and the effects on vulnerable young people. To examine core concepts and equip you to raise awareness amongst your service users. To learn more about CSE through the discussion of high-profile cases.

3 Session Outline Welcome and introductions Icebreaker Working agreement
Introduction to session – what are we here to talk about? Explain aims and timings. Consider your audience – staff, young people, etc. Review

4 Icebreaker Activity – True or false?
In pairs. Get to know the person sat next to you! For the next few minutes, share a personal experience with your partner, real or imaginary. You will each share your partner’s story with the group, who will decide if it’s true or false!

5 Group Activity – Positive and negative relationships
As a group, discuss: What does a positive relationship look like? What does a negative relationship look like? Think about family, partnerships, friendships, support, colleagues, etc. In small groups: Create a poster depicting the words and imagery associated with positive and negative relationships.

6 Group Activity – Relationships in the media
As a group, discuss: What relationships are young people seeing in films, online and in the press? How many of these are examples of positive relationships? Do young people view sex as an intimate, fun part of a loving, consenting relationship, or has it been skewed by violent, abusive media content?

7 Group Activity - Legal or illegal?
On your own: Read through the list and see if you think these incidents are legal or illegal. As a group: Discuss your answers and compare them with the actual results.

8 Group Activity – What is pornography?
“Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity intended to stimulate sexual excitement.” As a group: Discuss your individual answers to the Pornography Quiz, and compare them to the actual results.

9 Group Activity – What is consent?
In small groups: Explain consent to an alien.

10 What is consent? “Consent means that both people in a sexual encounter must agree to it, and either person may decide at any time that they no longer consent and want to stop the activity. Consenting to one behaviour does not obligate you to consent to any other behaviours. Consenting on one occasion also does not obligate you to consent on any other occasion. Consenting means only that at this particular time, you would like to engage in this particular sexual behaviour.” Palo Alto Medical Foundation

13 What is child sexual exploitation?
“Child sexual exploitation is a form of child sexual abuse. It occurs where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, manipulate or deceive a child or young person under the age of 18 into sexual activity in exchange for something the victim needs or wants, and/or for the financial advantage or increased status of the perpetrator or facilitator. The victim may have been sexually exploited even if the sexual activity appears consensual. Child sexual exploitation does not always involve physical contact; it can also occur through the use of technology.” Working Together 2018

14 What is child sexual abuse?
“Child sexual abuse Involves forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities, not necessarily involving a high level of violence, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening. The activities may involve physical contact, including assault by penetration (e.g. rape, buggery or other penetrative acts) or oral sex or non-penetrative acts such as masturbation, kissing, rubbing and touching outside of clothing. It also includes non-contact activities such as viewing pornography or taking of inappropriate pictures or grooming.” Working Together 2018

18 Group Activity – Profiling
In small groups: Create your stereotypical victim of child sexual exploitation, or Create your stereotypical perpetrator of child sexual exploitation.

19 Kayleigh Haywood “Cries of 'mummy' heard on night of murder”
Luke Harlow contacted Kayleigh via Facebook in Nov Within 10 minutes they had swapped phone numbers and went on to exchange 2600 messages. Kayleigh's body was found in a hedgerow two weeks after their initial contact. Stephen Beadman was jailed for raping, murdering and falsely imprisoning Kayleigh. Harlow was also jailed for grooming, sexually abusing and falsely imprisoning her.

20 Breck Bednar 14-year-old groomed over the internet and killed in a “sexual and sadistic” attack Breck told his parents he was sleeping at a friend’s house, but secretly travelled to see Lewis Daynes after months of grooming in an online gaming forum. Killer arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault of a 15-year old three years previously, with no action taken.

Lewis Daynes admitted to murdering Breck Bednar after luring him to his flat in Essex in Feb Used duct tape to bind his victim before stabbing him in the throat. “You had befriended Breck and a number of other adolescent friends through an online community [and] having lured the young victim to your flat, you murdered him.” Judge Justice Cox

29 year old Cambridge graduate and PhD researcher at the University of Birmingham. 137 online offences against 46 victims, male and female, including blackmail, voyeurism, making indecent images of children and encouraging the rape of a child. “In more than 30 years of law enforcement I’ve never come across an offender whose sole motivation was to inflict such profound anguish and pain.” Matt Sutton, NCA
