6 Just find the LCM otherwise known as the LCD like we did Monday.
When adding and subtracting fractions, the first thing you do is look at the denominator. If the denominator is the same, you just add or subtract the numerator. If the denominators are different, you must get them alike before you can move on. How can you get them alike? Just find the LCM otherwise known as the LCD like we did Monday.

7 + We need a common denominator to add these fractions.
Let me walk you through one to refresh your memory. We need a common denominator to add these fractions. +

8 2 10 6 + 5 3 2 x 5 x 3 = 30 LCD/LCM = 30 Find the LCD/LCM of the
two denominators. 2 10 6 + 5 3 2 x 5 x 3 = 30 LCD/LCM = 30

9 Do not add denominators
Make equivalent fractions. Add the numerators = 22 Do not add denominators + Simplify when possible 2 22 30 11 15

10 You Try ……. +

11 You Try ……. + Always convert improper fractions to mixed numbers for your final answer.

12 Watch your operation sign
Watch your operation sign. Subtraction steps are the same as addition steps. Just subtract numerators instead of adding them. You Try ……. -

13 Let’s Practice Using Our Dominos
1st Session – Adding Fractions – Work until the timer goes off Draw 2 dominos You and your shoulder partner will both work the problem on your dry erase boards and then compare your work and answer. Help each other get it correct before putting the dominos back and drawing 2 more. 2nd Session – Subtracting Fractions – Work until the timer goes off Draw 2 dominos You and your shoulder partner will both work the problem on your dry erase boards and then compare your work and answer. Help each other get it correct before putting the dominos back and drawing 2 more.
