4 The World Language Content Standards for Culture:
In order to understand the connection between language and culture, students discern how a culture views the world. Students comprehend the ideas, attitudes, and values that shape the target culture. These shared common perspectives, practices and products incorporate not only formal aspects of a culture such as contributions of literature, the arts and science, but also the daily living practices, shared traditions, and common patterns of behavior acceptable to society. As they progress along the Language Learning Continuum, students demonstrate understanding of cultural perspectives by behaving in culturally appropriate ways. In other words, for this project, it is important to understand that… People from different parts of the world have different perspectives (views & beliefs) on life and death which can be observed through their products and practices. It is important to learn about these perspectives, products and practices to better understand their literature, their art and their way of life. 5 HOW DOES understanding their products, practices and perspectives help us?
People tend to be fearful of what they don’t understand. This can lead to speculative condemnatory thinking, such as associating skulls with evil or the devil. When we take the time to comprehend what people believe and how those beliefs manifest themselves in the way they behave (customs & traditions) and the products they create, we create connections that lead to relationships based on understanding and tolerance for ideas different from our own. Relationships based on respect for ideas different from our own can lead to peace!
