What is Imperialism? A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, economically and/or socially

Types of Imperialism Colony: a territory that an imperial power ruled directly through colonial officials Protectorate: a territory that has its own government, but its policies are guided by a foreign power Sphere of Influence: a region or country in which the imperial power had exclusive investment or trading rights

The period between 1870 and 1914 has often been called the Age of Imperialism.

Reasons for Imperialism: 1. Economic: The US factories needed more natural resources and markets. 2.Military: The growing US Navy needs new naval bases worldwide. 3.Nationalism: Nationalism drove the US to complete for new colonies. 4.Cultural: The US looked to spread Western ideas (democracy) and Christianity around the world.
