Notion – a vague (fuzzy) idea Doggedly – stubbornly Elude – to escape or dodge Testify – to give a statement in court Conviction – a strong belief Promptly – at once; suddenly Soothing – freeing from anxiety Scarce – uncommon, few, limited Bleak – dreary, depressing

3 Indignant – angered at something unjust/wrong
Johnny was so indignant he nearly squeaked.

4 Notion – a vague (fuzzy) idea
Darry hasn’t got the slightest notion where you’re at and it is nearly killing him.

5 Doggedly – stubbornly “My parents,” Johnny repeated doggedly, “did they ask about me?”

6 Elude – to escape or dodge
I was trying to find the meaning the poet had in mind, but it eluded me.

7 Testify – to give a statement in court
“She said she […] would testify that the Socs were drunk and looking for a fight and that you fought back in self-defense.”

8 Conviction – a strong belief
“I was scared,” Johnny said with conviction.

9 Promptly – at once; suddenly
I picked up a dog, and he promptly bit me.

10 Soothing – freeing from anxiety
He talked to me in a low soothing voice, so I calmed down.

11 Scarce – uncommon, few, limited
You’re a nice kid, Ponyboy. Do you realize how scarce nice kids are nowadays?

12 Bleak – dreary, depressing; hopeless
… his eyes were bleak and stunned.
