1 Calculating Net Force

2 Net force:. sum of the forces acting on an object
Net force: *sum of the forces acting on an object *sum of the horizontal forces *sum of the vertical forces When net force = zero, forces are balanced When net force ≠ zero, forces are unbalanced

3 Use an FBD and VAD to determine net force.
What is the net force below? What will happen? Fnet=10N Left Box will speed up to the left.

4 Arielle is driving East and pushes down on the gas pedal in her car and causes the engine to give a force of 1000 N to the tires on the car. Air and ground resistance push back on the car to the West with a force of 850 N. a. Use an FBD and VAD to solve b. What is the net force on the car? 150N East c. What will happen to the car? Speeds up to the East

5 A 3kg box is sliding along an icy path at a constant speed.
a. Use an FBD and VAD to solve b. What is the net force on the box? 0N c. What will happen to the box? Moves with a constant velocity Moves with a constant velocity

6 Mark pushes against the 3kg box on the ice with 40 N of force, trying to stop it.
a. Use an FBD and VAD to solve b. What is the net force on the box? 10.6N c. What will happen to the box? The box will slow down, but not stop

7 For the situations in the following figures calculate the net force on the box. Remember to include direction! a. 25N South

8 b. 50N West c. 4N Right

9 d. 20N Left e. 20N West

10 f. 36N Down
