1 Do Now Using your notes and prior knowledge, Find three examples of how the U.S. has either had conflict or change because of expansion in the west.

2 V. Conflict from Expansion

3 Video 1) How did Jefferson view American Indians?
2) Why did Jackson pass the Indian Removal Act of 1830? 3) How did the Cherokee people respond? Why? 4) Why did the Cherokee eventually leave? 5) Why was the journey west so difficult for the Cherokee?

4 A. U.S. American Indian Policy
The Indian Removal Act (1830): passed under Andrew Jackson’s presidency. Forced about 50,000 Native Americans to move to the West/newer territories. Purpose- two reasons: 1) 2) Cherokee tribe resisted – do you think this is legal?

5 B. Conflict with American Indians
Worcester v. Georgia Outcome: Supreme Court ruled that state governments can‘t interfere with American Indian tribes. Big win for the Cherokee, right?

6 B. Conflict with American Indians
President Andrew Jackson disagreed with the Supreme Court and wanted the Cherokee to leave. Military held around 16,000 Cherokee at gunpoint until they left their home. Who received the land?

7 C. Trail of Tears Trail of Tears: Cherokee trip from their old home to the West. 3,000 – 4,000 died on the 1,000 mile walk to present-day Oklahoma from poor living conditions – cold, hunger and/or disease.

8 Guided Practice Analyze Trail of Tears from each of the following four perspectives: Cherokee tribe member White farmer from Georgia President Andrew Jackson Supreme Court justice

9 VI. Change from Expansion

Huge population boom: the U.S. population QUADRUPLED between 1800 and 1850 Much more immigration because of more land, more opportunities.
