2 Going into Grade 10 You need to select: EnglishMathematics ScienceCanadian History Civics AND Career Studies PLUS three elective courses AND two alternate courses Have you researched what courses you need to take NOW in order to be prepared for post secondary studies - AFTER high school? 2

3 PART 1 PART 1 The Credit Counselling Summary - CCS Your homeroom teacher will give you your CCS – It is a record of courses you have taken and are taking now Look at it carefully: Do you still require community involvement hours? (Grad requirement) Are there any compulsory courses you need to take? (i.e. Art, Groups 1, 2 or 3 – Grad requirements - See the OSSD handout) 3

4 PART 2 PART 2 The Research - Think With the End in Mind Where are you headed? What do you need in order to get there? Applying to an Ontario university or to a College Applied Degree program - must have 6 Gr. 12 U and/or M coded courses To take U or M courses in Gr. 11 and then in Gr. 12, you will need to have academic and in some cases applied coded courses in Gr. 10 College research, check out ontariocolleges.ca and for university research, check out www.electronicinfo.ca Research carefully and select your courses appropriately 4

5 Postsecondary admission considerations Work - - If you plan to go to work, select enough courses to graduate Skilled Trades – may require certain college courses (e.g., math and science for plumbing, electrical) There are over 140 trades ranging from 3-5 years in length for training 5

6 Postsecondary admission considerations contd Colleges – offer certificates (1 yr.), diplomas (2-3 yrs.), applied degrees (4 yrs) Need specific courses for specific college programs e.g., Social Worker at Seneca Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a majority of senior credits at the College Preparation (C), University/College Preparation (M) or University Preparation (U) level Grade 12 English: ENG4(C) or ENG4(U) Universities – offer Bachelors degrees (3-4 yrs.) Admissions are based on best 6 Grade 12 U and/or M courses, including ENG4U Check programs carefully for specific requirements e.g. Bachelor of Commerce (Business) Degree at the University of Toronto Grade Range -- Average: mid- to high 80s; MCV4U: mid- to high 80s; ENG4U: low to mid-80s + next best 4 Gr. 12 U and/or M subjects, Supplemental Application. An additional fee of $50 is required. 6

8 Part 3 Part 3 Student Tasks – Select your courses Complete the COURSE SELECTION ONLINE and print a copy Return your signed course selection sheet to your homeroom teacher by Wednesday, February 12 th Earlier returns are acceptable If you want to transfer schools, complete course selection anyway, in case the transfer does not go through 8

9 Realities for Course Selections You are requesting courses for TWO semesters - Semester 1 and Semester 2 Special circumstances will be dealt with by the Administration (Vice-Principals) No courses are guaranteed, but guidance staff will do their best to get you into the courses you have chosen 9

10 Please Note New: GPP3O1 – Link Crew Leadership Students will develop personal responsibility, a sense of self-worth, compassion for others, and enthusiasm for assisting others. The program will combine leadership activities and mentoring experiences tailored towards assisting the Grade 9 students in their transition year. Must complete an application and return to Mrs. Zicaro in room 123 by February 14 th ! Late applications will not be accepted CGD3M1 – Exploring Europe and Asia This course is offered as a Grade 10 course and has been designed for those students who enjoyed and were successful in the Grade 9 Geography course. See Mr. Bush in room 304 if you have questions. 10
