Tuesday 1/23 Warm-Up: American Dream Rank Order
Examine each quote on the handout entitled “American Dream: Rank Order.” Decide which description is most like your idea of the American Dream and rank that #1. Continue rank ordering each description from 1-10 (10 should be the one least like your idea of the Dream). On the back please explain your #1 choice and why that most appeals to you.

Collaborative Reading & Annotations
Purpose for Reading: Analyze the text’s perspective of the American Dream. Order your group by birthday. (Example: February 1 birthday = #1, February 8 birthday = #2, April 18 birthday = #3, September 23 birthday = #4) Read the text focusing only on your individual job below. Be sure that you annotate in your own text so you have examples ready. #1: Identity words and phrases that DEFINE the American Dream. #2: Identify words and phrases that COMMENT ON ACCESS to the American Dream. #3: Identify EXAMPLES OF AMERICAN VALUES that connect to the American Dream. #4: Identify RHETORICAL DEVICES, or things used to strengthen the argument – examples, rhetorical questions, ethos, pathos, logos, etc.

After Reading Purpose: To gather information and evidence to be used in your synthesis essay. (Save all these handouts!) Discuss the text, with each person sharing the most important examples from their annotations. Fill out the 4-square graphic organizer individually, adding examples that each group member gives you as you discuss the text.
