5 Separate but Unequal 1) The journey of the Civil Rights movement begins in 1896 with the Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson The decision upheld “separate but equal” and segreagation The NAACP had been fighting a long war against segregation and Jim Crow laws since the early 1900s 2) Some ground was made during WW2 when President Harry Truman desegregated the U.S. Military and government workers in 1948 But this is just the beginning…

6 Jackie Robinson During the 1940s, entertainment was segregated
3) Major League Baseball didn’t allow African-Americans until Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 In 1949, Robinson became the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Robinson’s success in baseball increased pride in African-Americans It showed they could succeed in the same arena as whites

7 Brown v. Board of Education
4) In the early 1950s, Linda Brown was a young girl in Topeka Kansas She was forced to walk past the all-white school close to her house to catch the bus for the all-black school she attended Eventually her father took the case to the Supreme Court 5) Brown v. Board of Education was a huge victory for the Civil Rights Movement It struck down the Plessy decision and “separate but equal”

8 Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycott
1955 The focus of the Movement switched to Montgomery, Alabama 1) Rosa Parks, a seamstress and NAACP secretary refuses to give up her seat in front of the “colored section” Her arrest led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott Civil Rights supporters refused to use the Montgomery bus system in protest of segregation

9 Martin Luther King, Jr. 2) It was not long after Parks’ arrest that 26 year-old Baptist minister Martin Luther King, Jr. became a major leader in the Movement An excellent speaker, and gifted at inspiring crowds, MLK gained a great deal of support Between 1955 – 1956, 50,000 supporters boycotted the Montgomery transporation system.

10 SCLC 1957 1) King and his followers create the Southern Christian Leadership Conference SCLC This civil rights organization advocated making changes through non-violence

11 Non-Violent Protest 2) A) Sit-ins – sitting peacefully at restaurants until forcibly removed B) Freedom Rides – white and black civil rights supporters rode together in buses C) Freedom Marches – Peaceful marches

12 Civil Rights in Birmingham, Al
The most intense and violent moments of the Civil Rights movement happened in Birmingham, AL Here, King was arrested 3) It is in jail that he wrote The Letter from a Birmingham Jail A letter of forgiveness and peace in the face of hate and racism 4) As the marches continued, TV footage shows Birmingham police using dogs, firehoses, and cattle prods to attack the peaceful protesters

14 Political Response to the Civil Rights Movement
1) As the Civil Rights Movement gained more strength, it gained a very powerful supporter President John F. Kennedy Kennedy wanted segregation to end, but had trouble getting Congress to pass his civil rights laws into action 2) August 1963 – the March On Washington takes place 200,000 people show up King gives his “I Have A Dream” speech It embodies the movement and is King’s greatest speech

15 The Civil Rights Act of 1964 November of Kennedy is assassinated, killed by a sniper in Dallas, Texas A new president takes the stage – Lyndon Johnson 3) Johnson gets the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed A) Segregation is banned in all work places B) Segregation in public facilities is banned C) Segregation in schools is legally banned

16 The Voting Rights Act of 1965
4) Civil rights advocates score another victory with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 This act outlawed discriminating voting practices
