4. The Southern African Large Telescope [SALT]
SALT is classified as one of the biggest telescopes in the world.
The roof is closed during the day and it only opens at night in order for the
telescope to see the sky.

5. The Southern African Large Telescope [SALT]
It uses very large mirrors and lenses to observe the stars and take photographs of it.
Each mirror looks like a beehive, shaped as a hexagon and it reflects the light onto a single, specific spot.

6. The Square Kilometre Array [SKA]
It is the largest radio telescope that was built.
It is a combined project with twelve [12] other countries.
It consists of thousands of radio receiver dishes.
The dishes are linked together into one large radio telescope.

Practical activities:
Fill a glass or bottle with water. If you look
through it, you will see that things also look much
bigger.
2. Make a mirror [glue the shiny foil from a potato chips packet onto a piece of cardboard].
3. Look through a lens at a wall chart / plant [stand at various distances [closer / further] and discover whether the images look different in sizes.
