HOW WE FEEL SCIENCE PHASE Italian ScienceGirls Team September March 2017
2
We presented the project to the girls and the families, asking them who was interested to jump in, explaining that we were looking for motivated and willing girls to work even outside of school hours. We began to translate the documents. We prepared the KO meeting by translating the documents for colleagues and for the girls. We prepared the school presentation together with the girls and advertised the project with families and the local press. Unfortunately the big earthquake that hit central Italy stopped everything for a while and we had to leave our school.

We worked with the girls to draw our idea of ScienceGirls logo, first drawing some sketches and then transforming them into digital logos by the use of Inkscape. Then we voted for the best two logos as discussed in the KO meeting and we posted them in basecamp within the time. In the meantime, we organized the role models interview by asking the collaboration of University of Perugia and preparing with the girls the question they wanted to ask. We also wrote down our ten questions for the open questionnaire proposed during the KO meeting, some of them local, and posted them in basecamp.

December 2016 We administered the KP questionnaire to the girls and left them some time to answer. They had difficulties with some of the questions, but they tried to answer anyway. We asked them to give us the filled questionnaire files by the end of the Christmas Holiday. On the 16th of December we went to University of Perugia to do the interviews. We went there with both girls and boys; they were divided into four groups , each of them visited a Department: Biology, Engineering, Mathematics and Geology. The girls did the interviews.

The professor told us that making mathematical objects has always been her passion. Her results prove that one’s will can really create great things and that there is no difference between the mind of a man and that of a woman!

The researchers explained us how they use freshwater macroinvertebrates for assessing water quality. We observed many invertebrates by the use of a microscope. The more biodiversity means the best water quality. We also saw other invertebrates

An expert has made us explore some aspects of Marine Geology applied to the study of climate change, while another explained geomorphology. We heard the noise of volcanoes when "exploding" and played with a model of the Earth's surface Video

January 2017 We made some meetings with the girls in order to edit the videos produced during our visit to the University, using youtube editor for editing, and google classroom to share the materials. They learned how to use the program very quickly, but the work was made longer because they had to cut some parts, synchronize the subtitles, translate them..etc. In the meantime, with the help of our Italian teachers, the girls wrote a report of their “University experience”.

February 2017 We met the girls and their parents to share the work done until now. We prepared some activities for the 11th February ( International Day of Women and Girls in Science ) and we proposed them to the whole class (girls and boys). We finished the video editing and questionnaire answer translations. We met the girls to revise the work done so far and to plan our future activities and proposal for the next meeting, where we are going to partecipate with four girls. The girls made some videos introducing themselves.

WHAT’S NEXT Most of the girls have changed their idea of science and have become curious and want to give their contribution just after the “interviews experience” MORE PRACTICAL SCIENCE (Made difficult by the lack of labs, materials, and time) We should help girls to carry out an investigation on the type of scientific activities in their territory such as research centers, companies, small and medium enterprises in the public and private sectors, etc.) with special reference to how many women are employed and what job they do in the structure. They should also investigate the reasons why the possibility of conducting a scientific career collides with real life and how the governments of their countries try to improve the situation, if they are doing.
