13 Simple Speed Sounds Phonics makes learning to read easy for children because we start by teaching them just one way of reading and writing every sound. Here they are on the Simple Speed Sounds chart. We teach Set 1 sounds first - (sounds as far as a e i o u) and then Set 2 (the shaded sounds ay - oy).

24 Talking Talk to your child as much as possible and ‘feed’ them new and ambitious vocabulary. “Let’s eat our lunch now.” “Let’s munch our lunch now.” “Let’s scoff our lunch now.” “Let’s devour our lunch now!” You’re looking ... not just... but...

25 Vocabulary Enrich conversations through description:
“Look at that rain. It looks like little diamonds sparkling on the window pane!” Have fun with words and language. “I’m as hot as a spud in a cooking pot!” Praise your child for using new words or interesting phrases

30 Organisation - Reception
During the Autumn term the children are being taught in class groups in Reception – they are learning a sound a day. They learn to say, read and write the sound. Within a small focus group in the classroom with the teacher/TA, each day the children are learning skills to support them with their reading. Before Christmas all children will be assessed and then from the Spring term they will split into smaller groups tailored to their needs where focused teaching using the storybooks alongside the phonics will enable them to read with increasing accuracy and fluency. When the children can read fluently they are much better equipped to understand the text.

31 Year 1 and Year 2 Children continue learning phonics in the same way as they move into Year 1. They are assessed a minimum of half termly and grouped based on their phonic knowledge and supported to continue to develop their phonic skills in readiness for taking the phonics screening check in June. Any children who require additional support in Year 1 will have a period of 1:1 phonics tuition. Most children will have completed the RWI phonics programme by the end of Year 1. Children who would still benefit from the programme in Year 2 can continue this in the early part of Year 2.

32 Any other questions

horizons and offers new and exciting ways of seeing and making sense of our lives and of the world around us. Michael Morpurgo
