Genetics Unit 3, Part 2 (Inheritance Patterns)

2 What makes You…You?

3 Chromosome # Each cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes for a total of 46.
23 from mom and 23 from dad

4 Homologous Chromosomes
2 chromosomes (1 inherited from each parent) that have the same: length centromere position and they carry genes that control the same inherited traits

5 Example: The gene for earlobe type will be located at the same position on both homologous chromosomes Although these genes both code for earlobe type, they may not code for the exact same type of earlobe.

6 Karyotype An image of all the chromosomes in a cell
Scientists have assigned a # to each pair and ordered them from largest to smallest

7 Autosomes: Pairs 1-22 Chromosomes that contain genes for characteristics not directly related to the sex of an organism Autosomes are homologous

8 Sex Chromosomes – Pair #23
Chromosomes that control the development of gender characteristics Humans: Female – XX Male – XY Sex Chromosomes are not homologous

9 Traits Survey Earlobe Attachment Tongue Rolling Cleft Chin Dimples
Handedness Freckles Naturally Curly Hair Allergies Hand Clasping

10 Traits Survey Colorblindness Hairline Shape Taste Control PTC Tasting
Sodium Benzoate Tasting
