A progressive Republican, Roosevelt believed in government action to mitigate social evils, and as president he in 1908 denounced "the representatives of predatory wealth” as guilty of “all forms of iniquity from the oppression of wage workers to unfair and unwholesome methods of crushing competition, and to defrauding the public by stock-jobbing and the manipulation of securities

2 Roosevelt Gets Involved
Penn. Coal miners went on strike in May 1902 The strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply to major US cities Forced owners to give workers a raise and a 9 hour work day 1st time the government intervened to help workers When the strike continued, TR threatened to send federal workers in to make sure work continued

3 Regulating the Railroads
Hepburn Act – Gave the govt the power to set and limit shipping costs Elkins Act – Fined railroads that gave special rates to special customers The Hepburn Act of 1906 authorized the ICC to set maximum railroad rates, and extended the agency's authority to cover bridges, terminals, ferries, sleeping cars, express companies and oil pipelines RR’s were very unfair as they charge whatever they wanted

4 Busting Trusts (Monopolies)
Roosevelt was known as a “trust-buster” Break monopolies up into smaller businesses to protect consumers and other businesses “Good” trusts and “bad” trusts “Bad” trusts were ones that bullied smaller businesses or cheated consumers “Good” trusts were allowed as long as they were “fair”

Gifford Pinchot: Forests would be preserved for public use This meant that while trees age, they will eventually become good lumber Resources should be cultivated Pinchot is known for reforming the management and development of forests in the United States and for advocating the conservation of the nation's reserves by planned use and renewal. He called it "the art of producing from the forest whatever it can yield for the service of man." Pinchot coined the term conservation ethic as applied to natural resources. Pinchot's main contribution was his leadership in promoting scientific forestry and emphasizing the controlled, profitable use of forests and other natural resources so they would be of maximum benefit to mankind National Reclamation Act: Federal Govt has power to distribute water Dams, reservoirs, etc. built by the government This meant that water in one state could be redirected to another state
