LICHENS – What they look like

LICHENS & AIR POLLUTION
A lichen is usually a partnership between fungi and algae. Sometimes, lichens are made up of fungi and cyanobacteria which is also known as blue-green algae. In either case, the organisms of a lichen co-exist in a symbiotic relationship where each benefits from the other. "Old Man's Beard." The fungi provides the physical structure of the lichen while the algae provides food for both itself and the fungi through photosynthesis. Often, a lichen's importance in an ecosystem is overlooked. Most lichens are sensitive to air pollution and can often forecast problems in the environment. If the environment is too polluted, the lichen will disappear which is a strong warning and indicator of poor air quality.
