4 Charlemagne Unites Germanic Kingdoms
Many Germanic kingdoms that succeeded the Roman Empire were reunited under Charlemagne’s empire. Today you are going to tell the story of a man named Charlemagne in the form of a children’s book Every slide I do should probably be a page in the book Need to have: Main Ideas and people Simple language Pictures

Pg. 2 Invasions of Western Europe Do you remember one of the immediate causes of the fall of the Western Roman Empire again? Germanic invasions!!! How would the invasions alter the following? Economy: Trade and businesses decreased Government: cities were abandoned Culture: People become less “civilized”, farming becomes more important nobles

12 Pg. 6 Clovis & the Franks Franks held power in Gaul (France and Switz.) Clovis was the leader 496 – In battle, he prayed to Christian God….? They won and he converted 511: Clovis united the Franks into one kingdom Why do we care? Clovis + Roman Church = Politics + Religion

13 So after what we have talked about, which of the following institutions do you think remained in the Western Roman Empire? Political institutions Economic institutions Educational institutions Religious institutions The Church was the sole surviving institution of the Roman Empire. During this time of political chaos, the Church provided order and security.

Pope crowned him EMPEROR Why do we care? FIRST time a pope had claimed the political right to confer the title “Roman Emperor” Demonstrated that what was now joined: Germanic Power Church Roman Empire
