Oppression & Genocide: Different Groups & Roles

Question/Discuss How is oppression linked to living conditions such as poverty, health, employment, or income? How does this relate to stereotyping and discriminating against people/groups? (Connor et al. 8.6)

Privilege A social group which has unearned rights (cultural, legal, social, institutional). People in this group are considered to be the standard. People in other groups are pushed aside, having rights which are diminished. They’re perceived as invisible, unnatural, deviant, etc. Often, those in the privileged group are unaware of their privilege. (Connor et al. 8.14)

Marginalized Status of a group with less power or influence.
They lack full/equal access to these aspects of society… Cultural Economic Political Social (Connor et al. 8.14)

Ally Somebody who is… In an advantaged social group
Understands their privilege (or actively moves toward understanding) Resists and opposes oppression in themselves and communities (Connor et al. 8.13)

Related Concepts Xenophobia:
Fear & hatred towards the foreign/different/outside Internalized Oppression: When an oppressed individual believes false perceptions, stereotypes, and assumptions others have as true of themselves. Involves self-hatred and/or shame of own identity. (Connor et al )
