Students are angry, hostile, and resentful. Students dont want to remediate; they want to move on, but they cant. Students need to know failure is NOT an option.

The Participation Grade Since this is 1/3 of the course grade, it provides: The freedom to try The grease to get the students participating How the grade is earned On-task = 100 Not dependent on speed or the ability to finish as much as everyone else in the class Is dependent on the student staying on task

Lessons should be introduced and explained with clear examples Students work together in peer tutoring groups Students work through problems in sets of 3, checking their work as they go Students ask questions and get clarification as they go, so each assignment is worth more, even if they work fewer problems Therefore, students never work through an entire assignment only to turn it in and realize they failed and wasted an entire class period.

The Test Grade The Test Grade is 1/3 of the course grade The grade is NOT curved This gives students a realistic evaluation of what they know and dont know The test is completed individually Since the tests are only 1/3 of the grade, students wont fail the course even if they struggle There is no review before any test Spoon-feeding the students hurts far more than it helps Every test is cumulative This reinforces the idea that what they are learning is important – it doesnt just disappear after a unit test
