hǎo The Chinese script is the only logographic writing system still in daily use in the world today. The total number of Chinese characters is estimated at over fifty thousand, of which only five to eight thousand are frequently used, while three thousand are normally adequate for everday situation. Many characters are pictographic which means they evolved from pictures. The construciton of this kind of characters depicts either the whole image or the partial characteristic of an object. It is the orignial method of forming characters.
