2. Early History (section 1)
Early political documents from British history included such things as trial by jury and due process
The colonists came to America with a belief in a limited, representative government
The colonies were established for separate reasons and therefore didn’t see themselves as “friends”

3. Ha ha, you can’t get us across the ocean…

4. Remember!!
The colonists were used to ruling themselves since the King was so far away….
Many of the colonies made quite a bit of money off of trade…

5. Colonists get angry… section 2 (bring on Jerry Springer)
Since the colonists liked ruling themselves, new royal policies were not well accepted
Ruling of the colonies was more “federal”
Colonists tried to unite (Albany Plan, etc.) but that never really worked out.

6. I told them the Albany plan was a good idea.

7. But they were pushed over the edge!!
Stamp Act (even though it was repealed)
Led to “no taxation without representation”
Boston Massacre
Boston Tea Party
First Continental Congress: sent an angry doc to the king
Second CC: Revolution begins

The Articles of Confederation emerge in 1777
States have all the power
National gov can not: tax, regulate trade, no executive, no judicial branch
Can not be amended unless everyone agrees
Essentially: no national government!

11. Constitution Time!! (section 4)
Part One: Writing the dang thing
Compromise, compromise, compromise
Virginia wants a bicameral, representative gov while New J wants a unicameral, one state-one vote gov
This led to….the GRRRREAT Compromise
Or connecticut compromise
There was also the 3/5 and slave trade compromise
So are we done?

12. Not so fast!! (section 5) Convention part two: Do we sign this thing?
Federalists agreed- heck yeah!!!
The Anti-federalists complained:
It doesn’t have a BoRs
It doesn’t mention God
It gives too much power to the pres (ie KING?!)
It doesn’t let states print money
It could enslave a free people!!! (Patrick Henry says)

13. In the end… 9 states ratify Finally Virginia and New York join in
George W becomes the first president
