Carries O2 to all parts of the body Dark red (oxygen poor) or bright red (oxygen rich) Produced in bone marrow Disc shaped with pinched center; allows them to bend and squeeze through capillaries

makes up 55% of blood and is a yellow colored liquid 95% of plasma is H2O

White Blood Cells (WBC):
Components of Blood White Blood Cells (WBC): fight infection larger in size but fewer in number body increases production of WBC’s when needed (sick, have an infection)

Platelets: Cell fragments that help blood clot at a wound site
Shaped somewhat like plates Produced in bone marrow Hemophiliacs lack a sufficient number of platelets
