1
Capacity and Volume
2
Learning Intention We are extending our knowledge of capacity and volume. SC : I can explain the difference between capacity and volume. SC : I can estimate the volume in a container. SC : I can solve word problems about capacity and volume.
3
Capacity Is the amount an object can hold.
Where have you heard of the term capacity before?
4
Volume Is the amount in the container.
We often estimate what the volume is.
5
Bath Time This tub will hold about 50 litres of water
6
Small amounts of liquid are measured in millilitres
A teaspoon holds 5 millilitres A cup holds about 250 millilitres 4 cups would make a litre
7
A bottle of wine usually contains 750 millilitres
Sometimes it says 75 cl on the bottle. This means 75 centilitres. There are 100 centilitres in a litre.
8
Estimate the capacity of these containers
500 millilitres 250 millilitres
9
Try these … 2 litres 100 litres
10
How about these? 10 millilitres 500 millilitres (half a litre)
11
and finally … 550 ml 5 ml
12
Conversion Metric 1 litre = 1000 millilitres
1.5 litres = 1500 millilitres Imperial (approx conversion) 1 pint = 0.6 litres 1 litre = 1.8 pints What is measured in pints?
13
Practice makes perfect
When you pick up a container at home, try and estimate its capacity. Then check to see how accurate your estimation was.
14
Carousel of Activities
1 - Estimating and Measuring 2 - Estimating millilitres 3 - Word Problems 4 – Converting capacity Each group will have 15 minutes per station to complete the activity.
