Figure 1 The sphincter of Oddi. The distal end of the sphincter of Oddi is termed the common channel where the bile and pancreatic duct have fused. Circular and longitudinal muscle fibers surround this common channel. Muscle fibers also surround the distal portion of the biliary and pancreatic sphincters with little overlap between the two. A significant portion of the sphincter lies within the duodenal wall. The biliary sphincter contains circular muscle with some smooth muscle extending past the duodenal wall. The extent of circular muscle surrounding the distal pancreatic duct is variable. Before entering the duodenum, each duct is completely surrounded by circular muscle fibers some of which form a figure-of-8 pattern around the 2 ducts.
