Foreshadowing The author’s use of clues to hint at what might happen later in the story. Example?

Irony A contradiction between what happens and what is expected.
Three types: Situational – when something happens that contradicts the expectation Example: A fire house catches on fire, A hairdresser having a bad hair day. Verbal – something contradictory is said Example: forgetting to do something and saying “Oh, great” Dramatic – the audience is aware of something that the character or speaker is not. Example: Romeo and Juliet – The audience knew Juliet drank a sleeping potion, but Romeo does not.

Oxymoron A figure of speech that links two opposite or contradictory words, to point out an idea or situation. Example: Jumbo shrimp, run slowly, tiny giant, big little brother, small crowd 3 other examples?
