1
Hydrological Study & Flood Mapping of Wadi Zeimar-Anabta Town
Mohammad Zayed Waleed Saadeh 2010
2
The Project Hydrological study and flood mapping of Wadi Zeimar, that flows through Anabta town and causes many impacts and problems to the people of Anabta This project aims to address Wadi Zeimar problem and put it under discussion and research. Flood mapping is done to predict future flood related problems
3
What Has Been Done ? Data and documents about the problem and project area were collected A questionnaire was applied to get further information about water and wastewater status Data and flow analysis Flood mapping Conclusions and recommendations
4
Study Area Anabta is one of the largest towns of Tulkarm governorate, located in the northern West Bank It has a population of 8,000 inhabitants (2010) Anabta land parcels is about 15,500 donums It is about 150 meters AMSL Annual rainfall of Anabta town is 645 mm
5
Location of Anabta
6
The Problem Wastewater from Nablus west and other villages flow open in wadi Zeimar During winter, storm water is flowing in the wadi along with the sewage Environmental and flood problems Pollution of groundwater wells and public health problems
7
Impacts of The Problem Good environment for rodents and insects that transport microorganisms and cause diseases Increased rate of cancer in Anabta Leakage of sewage to the groundwater Very bad smells from the sewage Uncivilized appearance

Questionnaire Output Water resources is mainly from the municipality wells Water consumption is 83 l/c.d The monthly average water consumption is 25,000 m³ The monthly peak factor is 1.5 Annual increase of water consumption is calculated at 4%

Flow Analysis Methodology
15
Flow Analysis Wastewater flow using flow measuring device
Length = 18.1 m Width = 3.1 m ∆ elevation = 18 cm Slope = 1% Manning coefficient n = 0.015
16
Flow Analysis Water level over a day August 30, 2006
17
Flow Analysis Water level vs flow rate
18
Flow Analysis 2) Wastewater flow using conversion factor
Water consumption and sewage flow vary as to the contributing areas Wastewater conversion factor is 80% Q 2007 = 0.19 m³/s Q direct measuring = 0.15 m³/s The difference is 20%
19
Flow Analysis Storm Water Analysis Rational Method
Rainfall Intensity i = 16 mm/hr Retaining period Tr = 25 year Duration tc = 160 min Runoff Coefficient C = 0.32 Catchment Area A= 129 km² Flow rate Q = 185 m³/s

Flow Analysis 2) SCS Method Rainfall intensity i = 16 mm/hr
Retaining period Tr = 25 year Curve number CN = 74 (weighted) Runoff h = 2.4 in Duration tc = 160 min Catchment Area A= 129 km² Peak flow rate Qp = 233 m³/s Modified peak flow rate Q modified = 140 m³/s (reduced by 40%)

Recommendations Construct Nablus and Tulkarm WWTPs, and Wastewater collection systems Cleaning the route of wadi Enlarging some critical sections Control the route of the wadi and prevent garbage dumping Repairing and calibrating the measurement device Keep the wadi clean!!!
