Daily Warm up Draw an example of two lines intersecting. Describe the way that two lines intersect. Draw an example of two lines not intersecting. Describe the way that two lines do not intersect. *Note: Give Examples of each type of lines that you see in our Classroom.
2
1.1 Points, Lines and Planes
3
Core Concepts Point It has no dimension.
Can be labeled by a capital letter. A dot represents a point. Line It has one dimension. It is represented by a line with two arrowheads and continues without end. Through any two points there is exactly one line. You can use any two points on a line to name it. A “Point A” “line m” or “line AB” (AB) or “line BA” (BA) B A m
4
Core Concepts Plane It has two dimensions.
“plane M” or “plane ABC” Plane It has two dimensions. Represented by a shape that looks like a floor or wall, but extends without end. Through any three points, not on the same line, there is exactly one plane. You can use the three points not on the same line to name the plane. M A C B
5
Core Concepts Segment The line segment AB consists of endpoints A and B and all points that are between A and B. “segment AB” (AB) or “segment BA” (BA) B A
6
Core Concepts Ray The ray AB has one endpoint A.
Name the ray starting with the endpoint. Note that AB and BA are different rays. Opposite Rays If point C lies on AB between A and B, then CA and CB are opposite rays. A B B A “ray AB” (AB) “ray BA” (BA) B C A
7
Collinear Points Points that lie on the same line Coplanar Points that lie on the same plane
8
Sketch your Example 1 Figure.
Use the figure to answer the following. Example 1: a) Give another name for PQ and plane R. b.) Name three points that are collinear and name four points that are coplanar.
9
Try this! Using your figure give two other names for ST. Name a point that is not coplanar with points Q, S and T.
10
Example 2 Use the figure to answer the following.
Give another name for GH. Name all of the rays with endpoint J. Which of these rays are opposite rays? What is the point of intersection of the two lines? E G J F H
11
Try this! Use the drawing in example two to answer the following. 1) Are JG and GJ the same ray? Are HJ and HG the same ray? Explain.
